How to choose a streaming service

By the FlickFinder team · Updated October 30, 2026

With so many services to choose from, it's easy to end up paying for three and watching one. The approach that works best is simple: start with what you actually want to watch, and work backwards.

1. Make a short list of titles

Write down five to ten films or shows you want to watch in the next few months. Include a couple you'd re-watch, since comfort viewing is often what keeps people subscribed.

2. Check where each one is streaming, in your country

This is the step most people skip, and it matters more than anything else. Catalogues are different in every country, so a list of "what's on Netflix" written for American viewers may be wrong for you. Search each title on FlickFinder and note which service carries it where you live. If one service covers most of your list, that's your answer.

3. Know what each big service is known for

Netflix has the widest reach, available in nearly every country, and a huge range of its own films and series in many languages. Prime Video comes with Amazon Prime in many countries and mixes its own series with a large licensed library. Disney+ is home to Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, which makes it a strong pick for families. Max carries HBO's series and Warner Bros. films where it's available. Apple TV is smaller but focuses on its own high-budget originals.

In the US, Hulu, Peacock and Paramount+ add network TV shows and, in some cases, live sport. Many countries also have strong local services, so check the "Also available regionally" section on any FlickFinder result.

4. Compare the plan, not just the price

Prices change often and differ a lot between countries, so check the service's own site. Beyond the monthly cost, compare whether the cheapest plan has ads, how many screens can watch at once, whether downloads are included, and the picture quality on each tier.

5. Rotate instead of stacking

Most services are monthly with no contract. Rather than keeping several running at once, many people subscribe to one, watch what they wanted, cancel, and move to the next. Use FlickFinder to see where your next few titles are before you switch.
